Impossible Project pt. 2

On my last post I explained our final project, the Impossible Project. A project where we get to choose what ever we want to do, as long as we don't originally know how to accomplish it.

Last time I was looking for examples online of laser cut maps and different materials that could be used. Since then I was researching old Houston, TX maps from the early 1900's up to the 2000's. I found a variety of maps that I thought might be good to use for my project. After that I realized I needed to go to the MIL in the Texas State University Art Building... the MIL is very similar to the makers space, mentioned in my last post, and contains machines such as a laser cutter, 3d printers, and a die cutter.

When going online to schedule an orientation time to learn how to use the machines, I noticed that it's only offered on Fridays, aka during my 4 hour Friday class that i cannot miss!!!! Okay, stress level has definitely increased!! Well, there is one slot for 11am - 11:20am for a basic orientation which was an hour before my class that I emailed the MIL about reserving for. (I usually go into class around 10:45 / 11 am to make sure everything is finished and work on some assignments before class starts, so this is a perfect time). The only bad thing is, the specific Laser Cutter Orientation was right in the middle of my Friday class. I'm really hoping they reply to my email quickly and are able to work around my schedule.

Mean while, I've been thinking of how I was going to have these maps presented... framed, free standing, etc. As of right now, I think what I want to do is cut out 3 maps with the laser cutter in either wood or a harder paper (like card stock so it doesn't just fall apart), then get a frame for each of them and hang them up in a line to show the growth of Houston, TX. We also need to show some sort of demo, or learning object. It cannot be a power point, but it can be a video with a voice over or a screen casting video. I'm thinking maybe I can do a video of me working on adobe illustrator with the maps and showing how to do everything so that the laser cutter can read where to cut it.

I'm staring to realize how busy the month of April is, so as stressed out as I am with everything, I'm actually pretty excited to do this project!
